The HITECH Act requires full transparency when it comes to HIPAA breaches, according to HHS.gov. An analysis of the data shows each state and its number of HIPAA violations by covered entity, business associate, breach type, date of breach and the amount of individuals affected.
The breakdown of states and number of breaches are as follows:
- 39% Less than 3 breaches
- 39% 4 to 9 breaches
- 15% 10 to 20 breaches
- 7% More than 21 (the highest being 36).
The incident with the greatest amount of individuals affected included Health Net and their business associate, IBM from California, affecting 1.9 million.
