Cassie Kiehl says:
You are missing one critical piece of software. Very few medical billing software products "automatically" assign codes based on the medical record. The process of assigning codes from clinical documentation usually requires someone certified or at least well-versed in code selection. Additionally, the codes need to follow billing rules set forth by the insurers, including Medicare. For this reason, another category of software called medical coding and compliance software, like SpeedECoder, an online example, is necessary.
EHR vendors may have coding, compliance, and billing software built-in, but more than likely these are still components that need to be added. Sometimes EHR vendors have modules for an additional cost that provide this functionality in an integrated way. This is actually an important point of difference for providers to be looking for when they purchase EHRs.
